I came across this image today, licensed a year ago for a project (and never used). At first glance the image is foolish — a paradox in terms of core yoga values — but it serves as a wry metaphor for “Think Different.”
Perhaps all of us former Apple employees, indoctrinated in that culture and its values, are bound to think different — but I think we learned from that experience to look for fresh solutions or new combinations. We take a different approach to problem solving or envisioning new possibilities.
Putting It into Practice
For the past several months a local yoga teacher and I have been trying to find time for some brainstorming. She has a DVD project she’d like to create, and I have some ideas on fresh approaches to yoga for those of us who want to practice at home from time to time. She’s an amazing teacher, deeply spiritually grounded, with a nourishing voice. I’m sure that whatever she produces will find a grateful following.
Because I come from the high-tech world, I can easily imagine delivery styles that people grounded in the centuries-long traditions and discipleship norms of yoga cannot see. I can think of a number of ways in which professional and serious amateur yoga practitioners could share asanas with each other, at times when they’re not together in a studio environment. In that regard the linear, fixed medium of DVD delivery gets in the way.
We’re set to meet in four weeks. Who knows what may come of it…
